INSPIRE MORE GIRLS TO BE STRONG, SMART AND BOLD!

Girls Inc. of San Diego County (GISD) is seeking program volunteers who will inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold. Program volunteers serve as positive role models to girls by listening, guiding, and encouraging them side-by-side during one-hour program classes. These volunteers contribute to girls’ personal development by sharing their own academic and professional successes.

Volunteer Mentor Opportunities – Spring Semester 2019

Thinking SMART
Thinking SMART provides girls ages 12-14 with opportunities to practice thinking like scientists by thinking with scientists. Adult professionals are guest teachers and group mentors for participants, to bring their science smart to girls in meaningful and interactive ways. Thinking SMART volunteers will be leading hands-on science experiments and activities with the girls to get girls excited about science. This semester’s experiments focus specifically on biology and life sciences. Your role is to reinforce the objective of the experiment, help girls follow step-by-step procedures and summarize what they’ve learned.

Safe & Strong
Safe and Strong explores discussions on gender violence issues, reinforces and provides safety strategies and self-defense skills for teen girls, and introduces them to community experts and resources. In this program, you will be working with the girls side-by-side and adding to the conversations on boundaries, risky behavior and how to build a healthy community.

Futures and Options!
Futures and Options is for girls ages 15 to 18 and covers economic and financial topics such as: attitudes and values about money, career strategies, worker rights, taxes and other paycheck deductions, planning and budgeting, banking, using credit, shopping tips, renting vs. buying, avoiding predatory lenders and other financial traps, and investment options. You will have the opportunity to coach students as they prepare college and post-high school budgets, as well as teaching girls consumer tips, budgeting, and more.
